Learning About The Government

This Fall, the 3rd Grade worked hard on a Government Unit. They spent several weeks learning all about the branches and levels of government as well as voting, citizenship, and American symbols. They even made their own campaign teams. Half of the class became "Team Romney" while the other half formed "Team Obama". The teams wrote persuasive essays on why you should vote for their candidate, made campaign posters, and even campaign videos. The class then hosted an all school election where Barack Obama was named the winner. The class had a lot of fun and learned a lot. Maybe one of them has been inspired to become the future president!

Annual Leaf Raking Project

Students showed their commitment to service last Friday during their annual Leaf Raking Project. Fifth through eighth grade students visited the homes of parish and community members to collect leaves. The children got involved to show that they cared about the well being of their neighbors, and the beauty of their neighborhood. We would like to thank the students and parents who volunteered; and also the student council members, who put on a successful event.

On the Bulls Home Court

On October 23rd, the SFR girls and boys basketball teams got the honor of playing a game in the United Center arena. The varsity teams joined up with students from OLC and competed against teams from St. Agnes on the Chicago Bulls basketball court. The junior varsity teams got the opportunity to play knockout on the very same hoops that Derrick Rose uses. After the game students got the chance to see some stars as Bulls players came out to warm up before their game. We spotted Carlos Boozer, Nate Robinson, Luol Deng, Joakim Noah, and a few others.

The students had a great time and were very grateful to Mr. Zangrilli for helping us enjoy this opportunity and for donating tickets to the Bulls game that night. Students and their parents stayed to watch the game and were pleased to see the Bulls win!

Blog Author Visits

Saint Frances of Rome's 6th and 7th grade students were treated to a visit and presentation from Lindsay Karson. Ms. Karson, a current neuroscience student at UIC, has taken her passion for books and built a successful blog where she shares book reviews she has written. Book publishers have taken note of her blog and often send her books for her to review. She gave our students a presentation on the book review process and encouraged them to submit their own book reviews for her website. Ms. Karson also made a charitable donation of books to SFR school, and we are grateful for her generosity.

Bulls/Sox Academy Field Trip

Our 4th through 7th grades took a trip to the Bulls/Sox Academy in Lisle, Illinois where they learned about fitness, nutrition and general health. The students enjoyed how hands-on and interactive the learning activities were. A big hit was "The Vault”, a center where students played interactive video games that were powered by their own physical exercise. If the student stops exercising the game shuts off—a great motivation to continue to exercise!

Seminary Visit

On Friday, April 20th, the 3rd and 7th grades went to Mundelein Seminary to visit Deacon Bobby Kruger who is being ordained to the priesthood May 12, 2012. The students spent the day with him learning about vocations as well as the seminary and all it has to offer. Hopefully, some will be inspired to listen to God’s call and follow Bobby into the priesthood or into the religious life as a sister, brother or deacon.
