Besides aiming to provide the best education at St. Frances of Rome School we aim to enrich the student's experiences by hosting multiple events throughout the school years. These events range from fundraisers to field trips, service hours, and many other events. Below you will find some of the activities students have participated in so far in the 2022 - 2023 school year.
Our principal, Mr. Jackson, is a strong proponent of active and experimental learning that he organized the first major trip for grades 7-8 to Camp Tecumse, IN in September 2022. Camp Tecumseh has been established since 1924 providing children with educational experiences taht enable students to connect with and gain repsect for themselves, their community, and the natural world through the various programs they offer.
Our students got to experience the Foundations for Sucesss Program where they were introduced to the five skills for success. Leadership, Trust, Communication, Problem-solvingm and Self-confidence were taught through team-oriented activities. Each activity encouraged students to apply the five skills in creative and insighful ways, gor example learning to negotate tricky group dyanmics, solve complex puzzles, and theink on their feet while developing empathy for others.
National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15) celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Latin American countries. Our students had a field trip to Cantigny Park in September 2022. The students enjoyed the outdoor art exhibit featuring 48 imaginable sculptures "Alebrijes: Creatures of a Dream World" which is inspired by Mexican folklore.
On October 12, 1925, Pope Pius XII, decreed Our Lady of Guadalupe to be "Patroness of all Americas." Her feast day is December 12 and in commemoration, our upper grades had an enactment of when Juan Diego encountered the Virgin Mary on Tepeyac Hill.
Sister Nirmala helped the upper-grade students present this enactment to the remaining grades during the school day in the school auditorium on December 9, 2022. In the following school weeks, the students also had an Advent Para-liturgy that was led by Mr. Jackson as a form of reflection during Advent.
During the Holiday season Mrs. Abarro, the music teacher, prepared our students for the annual Christmas Program that is held at St. Frances of Rome School and is open to family and friends. With Mrs. Abarro's guidance our students dedicated time to practice their singing and acting skills.
Our 8th grade class had the opportunity to visit the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Science at Northwestern University. Thanks to the SQE Inspire Program (Simpson Querrey Institute for Epigenetics) that aims to expose and inspire students to a variety of STEM careers and academics that complement those careers. Black history month is the opportunity to honor the accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endevor throughout our history. Highlighting the importance of black history, and the Civil Rights movement alongside with their contributions to society and culture.
Ms. Gant, kindergarten teacher, had students work on a a Mkeka Placemat and learn about Garrett Morgan who invented the 3 postion traffic signal.
